Singapore makes another mark as the global hub for R&D with the completion of National Research Foundation’s Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE), a 'green building' and soon to be home of 1000 researchers and world class research facilities. We can’t be more proud to be involved in this project by supplying ENiTo Deco Panels used on all the lift lobbies.

CREATE, a 'campus in the garden' is a manifestation of the evolving green building techniques in Singapore. CREATE aimed to pioneer the use of environmental sustainability and energy efficient technologies in the tropics which may become mainstream in the coming years. Some of the noticeable features of the building includes the significant reduction of artificial lighting by allowing natural daylight to come in and applying methods to conserve water through the collection, storage, treatment and re-use of rainwater and grey water from showers and lavatories.

An estimated $360 million budget was set aside for the design and development of the CREATE which received the Green Mark Award from the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) for environmentally frienly building construction and design. ENiTo Deco Panels was chosen by the senior project architect from Perkins+Will in San Francisco, USA for its indoor environmental quality, use of sustainable materials and green label certificate from the Singapore Green Label Scheme (SGLS) which contributed in getting the Green Mark credits.

Located at the southern end of NUS University Town, Singapore, construction of the 60,000m2 CREATE began in late 2009 which was awarded to Obayashi Corporation. More than 800 ENiTo Deco Panels with 3 designs are installed in the lift lobby on all 17 levels, including the basements and mezzanine with sizes varying from 190 x 2425mm to 1092 x 3525mm.

Safeguard your decking

Decking ProtectionWithin a year or two, sunlight and moisture will turn all woods into shades of grey. Outdoor decking is more prone to these changes due to rainwater, snow and direct exposure to UV rays from the sun. Woods natural color are broken down by light and washed out by rain. Don’t worry, it only fades very thin layer on the woods surface so it doesn’t affect your decks strength and durability. Moulds, fungi and other wood pests are another challenge to deal with. They settle on humid and moist timber which is very common but can and should be prevented.

The best solution to keep the sheer beauty of your decking is regular application of deck oils/stain at least twice a year. Deck oil act as a UV protectant and will also bring out the natural glow of your wooden decking. It also acts a barrier to shield your decking from unwanted elements. Prior to installation, all the sides of the board, even the bottom and end must be sealed with deck oil. This is highly recommended to guard each side and maintain equal moisture content on the wood. Depending on the wood’s density, deck oil must be coated until the wood can no longer absorb it.

For maintenance or renovation coats, make sure the decking is completely clean and dry. Existing decks with stains, dust, dirt, moulds and algae can be removed by scrubbing or using a stiff broom. For stubborn stains, it is also possible to use deck cleaning solutions or high pressure washer. The latter can wash out the wood grains if it’s done excessively so be aware. Light sanding is another alternative to get rid of some rough spots, splinters or minor damages on the board.

deck-oil-applicationDo not apply deck oils when it’s expected to rain in the next couple of days or if the wood is wet. This will prevent the moisture from getting trapped inside that will cause your decking to rot. Select oils that penetrate deep inside the wood to give it a long lasting defence.

While some may find weathered deck appealing, it’s still advisable to do a regular care and maintenance to preserve the aesthetic and longevity of your decking. Try the new and improved ENiTo DEC™ oil, now with 6 times more protection against mould & algae, blue stain, moisture, decay, rotting fungi, moisture and UV rays. Especially formulated to give decking and all woodworks the deep protection they need all year round!
